Background

In 2004, CONNYLacrosse implemented mandatory coaches training that required that in every CONNY game at least one coach on the sideline for each team must have completed CONNY Coaches Behavior Training and CONNY Rules Training. The same coach did not have to complete both training regimens and it did not have to be the head coach who trained, though that was the practice of most member programs. Teams had two years to comply, and these requirements were in full force for the 2005 season.

Following the 2005 season the CONNY Training and Sportsmanship Committees analyzed the quality of play and number and nature of sportsmanship complaints over the two previous seasons. This analysis showed clearly the efficacy of coaches training and the CONNY Board voted at its December 7, 2005 meeting to require that, beginning with the 2006 season, every coach who appears on a CONNY sideline must have completed both CONNY Coaches Trainingwith special emphasis on behavior and sportsmanshipand CONNY Rules Training and must complete refresher or follow-on training in each discipline at intervals to be set by the Board, initially every two years. At its February 6, 2007 meeting, the Board voted to require that every coach pass the free, open-book, CONNY Online Rules Test every year, but dropped any requirement to attend an in-person CONNY Rules Workshop. For CONNY Coaches Training, the Board still requires that every coach complete a CONNY recognized online or in-person coaches training course at least every two years.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
A Connecticut Lacrosse Foundation (the US Lacrosse Connecticut Chapter) Coaches Convention Clinic may be used to fulfill the veteran coach follow-on training requirement, but does not meet the initial training requirement, which is either the US Lacrosse CEP Level 1 Course or the PCA
Double-Goal Coach 1 Course, online or in person.

Some member programs seek to fulfill the CONNY coaches training requirements by conducting their own training. The Board has authorized two ways to do this.

First, some towns and cities require training for all youth coaches and other programs have local youth coach training resources equivalent the CONNY recognized PCA and US Lacrosse courses. If this training is professionally administered and covers the philosophical and behavioral issues addressed in PCA and USLax training, the CONNY Training Committee will recognize all who complete it as having attended a Coaches Behavior Training Workshop. Programs interested in pursuing this approach should send the course syllabus and trainer’s credentials to the CONNY Training Committee at   for review and approval.

Second, to aid remotely located member programs, the Board has authorized “downstream” workshops, conducted by individuals within the program who first attend the CONNY Workshops. Unless these individuals are trained clinicians, certified by PCA, USLax, or a similar organization recognized by the Training Committee, special quality control requirements govern CONNY “trained coach” recognition via this downstream workshop procedure. Programs interested in conducting downstream workshops should contact the Training Committee at   for the requirements.
