Lightning CONNY Results
by posted 06/22/2009

The Watertown Lacrosse Lightning team traveled to New Haven this past weekend to wrap up their season by participating in CONNY Lacrosse Jamboree at the Yale Bowl. Coming off an outstanding regular season, Watertown was seeded in one of the higher divisions and was prepared to face some of the stiffest competition it had seen all season. The day opened up against the team from Wilton, and Wilton sent a message early in the first half going up by one and relying on quick passes and precise movements in the offensive zone. Never one to be outdone, Watertown locked it up just before halftime with a laser-like shot from Dilon Sanzari. Wilton came out of the halftime with a new game plan geared towards solving the strong defense and goal tending by the Watertown squad. They managed to squeak one in on a hard angle shot to go up 2-1 with 5 minutes left in the game. Hoping for a miracle, Watertown got one as defenseman Wes Thompson took the ball in his own zone and ran it the length of the field, evading multiple defenders and scoring with less than 3 minutes left to gain his team a 2-2 tie in the match up. Ethan Mehlin gave a stellar performance in goal making 8 saves on 10 quality shots.

Game 2 saw Watertown match up against a stacked Cheshire team that had momentum in it's favoring following and earlier win over Wallingford. Watertown sent the message early on that this wouldn't be a cake walk for Cheshire. Ben Dispoto, Riley Baker and Zack Codere all tallied in the first half to take a 3-0 into halftime. As they have done all season, Watertown refused to sit on the lead and let their opponent come at them. Eric Passek and Larry Codere both provided second half goals that helped seal the victory. Cheshire scored late in the second half to make it 5-1 in what was otherwise another almost perfect  defensive performance by the likes of Wes Thompson, Colin Gribbon, Jason Zoldy and goaltender Ethan Mehlin. Watertown wrapped up their day in game 3 against

Wallingford and carried over all the momentum they had gained in the previous victory. Ben Dispoto opened up the scoring early in the half and Watertown's offense proved itself almost unstoppable as Riley Baker and Nick LaBella both tallied fast break goals before the half. The second half saw much of the same as Jason Zoldy, Joe Harris and Spencer Deros all tallied and Dispoto put in his second of the game for a 7-2 final. Goaltending was provided by Zack Mehlin and once again it was a strong defense that kept Wallingford from ever getting close. The Lightning team finished the season with record of 11 wins, 5 loses and 1 tie. The coaching staff would like to thank all the players and parents for the dedication and hard work on their part that was instrumental in putting together the record setting season.

2009 Conny Junior Aqua Division Champs
by posted 06/17/2009

The Watertown Lacrosse Junior team participated in the 2009 CONNY State Tournament held at Yale on Sunday, June 14. After a slow start to the season, the Watertown Juniors have been on a tear, winning their last 5 games leading up to the Tournament.
After enduring Mother Nature’s morning wrath, the Tournament directors had to jockey field changes and time delays. Watertown started their first game at 3:00pm vs. Cheshire Red under beautiful skies. Two stunning goals by Mitchell Hill, one a piece by Danny Glaser and Matthew Logue proved to be enough to hold off Cheshire by a score of 4-3. The defense was anchored by John Gribbon, Jeff Dwyer, Austin Esson and Justas Rodarte kept the shots to a minimum while Goalie Zach Ockerman made some key saves.
After the Conny Tournament director’s secured a field, Watertown was ready for the finals against Trumbull B. After allowing a quick goal, Watertown races back to a 3-1 lead following amazing attack work by Joegi Peche. The remaining attackman, Justin Freer, Matt Bovat, Gianfranco DaMelio, Patrick Budras, Riley Barnick and Anthony Quadrota provided the attack support that allowed Peche to score 4 goals. Middies Steele Moran, Ben Dispoto helped provide the offensive and defensive sparks to keep the game in reach while Lynne Keane provided defensive support. Gavin Meaney, meanwhile pumped in 2 goals. In the last 3 minutes, Danny Glaser put in another goal which unfortunately was followed by a response goal from Trumbull. With 2 minutes left, Watertown was up 7-6. To the crowd’s amazement, Trumbull scored with just over a minute left to tie the score. The next faceoff was key. While Trumbull gained possession and headed for the goal, Danny Glaser scooped up the ball, out ran his defenders, and scored with 10 seconds left. Faceoff specialist Matt Logue slowed the faces off long enough for time to expire and the celebration began. The Watertown Lacrosse Junior team is the 2009 Conny Aqua Division Champion.
Sadly, Walker Nadeau and Sam Goetch were unable to attend the CONNY Tournament but played a very important role in the team’s success. The team ended their season, 9-7-1

Coach Matt Glaser and Jake Glaser are very proud of their players.
